Is your heater breaking down when you need it most?

We’ve all been there: waking up to a freezing house, fumbling for a sweater, and realizing that the trusty heater isn’t pulling its weight. It’s one of those moments that can instantly put a damper on your day, especially when outside temperatures are dismal.

But before you start dialing a professional or stressing over a potential big repair bill, take a breath. This guide is here to expand on some simple tips you can use to troubleshoot your heater and address little hiccups without inducing the stress, time, and money that accompanies larger heating problems.

Tip 1: Check the Thermostat

Before diving into complicated fixes and the mechanics of your heater, it is always good to start with the basics—your thermostat. Make sure it’s set to “heat” and that the temperature is set higher than room temperature.

If you have a digital thermostat, don’t overlook the batteries! A dying or dead battery could be the source of your heating problems.

Tip 2: Inspect the Power Supply

It might seem obvious, but it is always good to double-check that your heater is plugged in and receiving power. If it is plugged in but is not working, take a moment to inspect your circuit breaker. Sometimes a breaker can trip without you noticing.

Tip 3: Change or Clean the Air Filter

Clogged filters are one of the most common culprits for heaters struggling to work efficiently. Over time, dust, dirt, and debris build up, cutting off airflow, and forcing your heater to work double time to push warm air through your home.

To fix or prevent this issue, simply check your filter. If it’s disposable, replace it with a new one. If it’s reusable, rinse it with water, let it dry completely, and put it back in place.

Tip 4: Look for Blocked Vents

Blocked vents can seriously impact your heater’s performance by trapping airflow. Take a walk around your home to check that the heat vents and registers are not covered by furniture, rugs, curtains, or any other items.

Even a partially blocked vent can reduce the heat circulation in your home. Clearing these obstructions is a quick and simple fix that can help your heater do its job properly.

Tip 5: Reset the Heater

Sometimes, your heater just needs a reset to get back on track.

Restart the heater and see if it’s functioning properly. If the reset button keeps tripping, it could indicate a bigger issue, so don’t hesitate to contact a trusted HVAC service provider!

Tip 6: Inspect the Pilot Light or Ignition

The pilot light or ignition system is essential for your heater to function properly.

For gas heaters, check if the pilot light is lit. If it’s out, consult your heater’s manual for instructions on safely relighting it.

For electric heaters, inspect the ignition system for any visible damage or dirt. If it’s not working, try resetting the system or checking the power connection.

Tip 7: Clean the Heater’s Components

Dust and debris can build up on your heater’s components over time which reduces its efficiency and can even cause some unpleasant smells.

To clean your heater, start by turning the power off for safety. Then, use a soft cloth or a vacuum with a brush attachment to gently clean the heater’s grills, blower fan, or burners.

Be careful not to damage any parts as you clean. Regularly removing dust will help your heater run more efficiently and keep your home warm and cozy!

Tip 8: Listen for Strange Noises

Strange noises from your heater can be a sign that something’s not quite right. Pay attention to sounds like banging, whistling, or rattling:

These sounds are warning signs that something might be loose or damaged or that a filter is clogged.

If you hear anything unusual, don’t ignore it! Turn off the heater and investigate the source. Tightening screws, replacing filters, or clearing debris can often resolve the issue and prevent bigger problems from developing down the line.

Tip 9: Check for Drafts in the House

Your home can’t stay warm if it is letting hot air escape and allowing cold air in!

To fix this, check for drafts by running your hand along the edges of windows and doors. When you find areas where you can feel airflow, seal the gaps with weatherstripping or caulk. On doors, install a door draft stopper to block cold air from making its way in.

Tip 10: Know When to Call a Pro

While there are several heater issues that can be fixed with simple troubleshooting, there are also times when calling a professional is the best and safest choice.

If you notice persistent problems—like a strong smell of gas, repeated system failures, unusual pilot light behavior, or frequent breaker trips—it’s time to bring in an expert. These situations could indicate serious issues with your heater that require specialized tools or expertise.

Don’t take risks with your safety. Knowing when to call a pro is just as important as tackling smaller fixes yourself!
